Build Back Better Regional Challenge Winner

Boosting the NYS Battery Hub

New Energy New York (NENY) was awarded $63.7 million in the EDA’s 2022 Build Back Better Regional Challenge (BBBRC). An additional award through New York State brought the award total to $113 million to establish a hub for battery technology innovation in upstate New York.

NENY is inspired by the work of the distinguished professor at Binghamton University and Nobel Laureate M. Stanley Whittingham who co-created the lithium-ion battery.

Whittingham founded the cornerstone project of NENY, the development of the Battery-NY prototyping and pilot manufacturing facility. This initiative will help bring this vital portion of the battery manufacturing process back to America, keeping the technology and innovation developed here from being exported and bottlenecked abroad and affecting the battery supply chain.

The Coalition

A project and goal of this size, however, cannot be completed without the cooperation of multiple organizations. NENY is led by Binghamton University with a cross-sector coalition of education, industry, community organizations and government to implement the programs funded by the BBBRC award. Thanks to this 16-member coalition, NENY has created many foundational programs to boost upstate New York’s battery and energy storage ecosystem, from promoting workforce development to nurturing up-and-coming entrepreneurs.
